- oversized tooth or teeth
A condition with tooth size above normal is commonly referred to as megadontia. Megadontia can affect the tooth crown, root or sometimes both. This condition typically occurs in upper (maxillary) incisors or lower (mandibular) second premolars. Tooth extraction and further dental implant placement may sometimes be needed to fix poor aesthetics.
- Small tooth or teeth
This condition is known as microdontia and may affect both single teeth and multiple teeth. The most commonly affected teeth are upper (maxillary) lateral incisors. The decision to keep or extract microdont tooth is determined by several factors, such as it’s functionality, aesthetics and overall role in existing malocclusion.
- If retained, such tooth would normally require the use of dental crown.
- If extracted, dental implant is generally placed instead, but such treatment could require the use of dental braces or other orthodontic appliances to create space, necessary for the dental implant placement.
