Different Types of Braces

Braces are no longer the clunky metal braces that used to be worn by teens and adults alike. Now braces can reflect the personality of the wearer or can be more aesthetically pleasing. These are some of the types of braces you can experience:

  • Clear Braces. When people say clear braces, they usually mean lingual braces, which are placed on the inside of the teeth, or Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign braces are placed on the outside of the teeth but are made of clear acrylic so they don’t have the metallic look of the traditional dental braces. Invisalign braces are a series of aligners that are switched every two-three weeks. Invisalign braces gradually put your teeth back into place but may not be the best option for severe malocclusion problems. The main advantage of clear braces is that they are hardly noticeable.
  • Gold braces. Gold braces have a warm look that some people consider to be more aesthetically pleasing than silver braces. They look rich and warm, due to the gold luster. They are also less likely to be allergenic for those who have metal allergies. They are, however, more expensive than the stainless steel variety.
  • Color braces. Color braces are metallic braces that have been colored by a metal coloring process. There are scores of colors to choose from and you can select all one color or all the colors of the rainbow. The companies that do this allow you to pick any color for any tooth you want, so you get to be very creative.
  • Glow in the Dark Dental Braces. Glow in the dark braces aren’t actually glow in the dark, when it comes to the metallic portion of the braces. It is the ligature or O-rings, the plastic band that attach the archwire to the brackets. These ligatures are like rubber bands and can be made from plastic that glows in the dark. Glow in the dark braces are relatively clear or slightly yellow during the day.
  • Designer Braces. Just like designer clothes, there are dentists that can create designer braces especially for you. Designer braces can be of any color or have designs on them and can be attached to the arch wire by any color ligatures. These braces have to be planned far in advance so the designer can create and has time to make the braces for you prior to having them put in. Designer braces can be very expensive.
  • Porcelain or Ceramic Braces. These braces use ceramic or porcelain brackets that are similar to natural tooth colors, so they aren’t as obvious as the metallic ones. They are bonded to the tooth and the arch wire is attached to the porcelain. There is still some metal in your mouth but the appearance is much more aesthetically pleasing, especially for adults, who don’t want people to see obvious metal braces in their mouth.
  • Self-ligating Braces. These are braces that have a permanent piece of hardware attached to the bracket that ensnares the arch wire. There are several systems that do the self ligating aspect of the braces. There are no elastic ligatures. They tend to be less esthetically pleasing than regular braces. A slide mechanism is used to attach the bracket to the arch wire.

One of examples of self-ligating braces is Damon braces brand. With self-ligating braces typically orthodontic treatment goes much faster than with conventional dental braces. Also, there are far fewer appointments required during treatment.
