Ever tried telling a young athlete he or she can no longer play a favorite sport until he gets his braces off? Although dental braces and sports don't go well together, teenagers always try hard to find a way to keep on playing.

The problem unfortunately, is not just about the expense of repairing the damage to the othodontic appliance, or getting a new one. Sport-related injuries with individuals undergoing othodontic treatment can go as far as jaw disclocation and can extend the othodontic treatment for an undetermined period of time.

Sports to avoid while wearing braces

Football, hockey, soccer, and basketball are considered the most dangerous sports for people with dental braces. That's because players have little to none face protection while ball is flying around.

Mouthguards for injury prevention

Mouthguards do a great job of protecting teeth. If a player wearign mouthguard gets injured, he won't additionally swallow parts of his braces or cut his lip and cheeks.

If you choose to play sports while wearing dental braces, remember that there's always a danger of complicating your orthodontic condition. You don't have to stop playing sports, but it always best to weigh the risks and take protection seriously.
