Once your orthodontist develops a customized treatment plan based on your X-rays and impressions of your teeth, he or she will be able to give you an estimated time of how long you'll need to wear teeth braces.
The duration of treatment mainly depends on:

  • The nature of your problem;
  • How well the teeth and jaws respond to the treatment;
  • How closely the orthodontist instructions are followed, such as wearing additional appliances, brushing your teeth, etc.

Typical treatment with dental braces usually lasts 6-24 months, assuming a full cooperation from the patient.
Orthodontic appliances, such as headgear, may also be a part of your orthodontist's plan. Not wearing them as prescribed, is likely to lengthen the treatment and prolong the time you have to stay in braces.
Skipping and postponing regular appointments to your orthodontist is not always a good idea, as it may affect the progress of orthodontic treatment.
With dental braces installed teeth brushing and flossing becomes more difficult and many people just stop doing it. Without proper cleaning, teeth might end up with cavities and tooth decay, which in turn may lengthen the estimated treatment.
The good news is, if you follow your orthodontist's advices closely, you’ll should be able to get well aligned teeth and perfect smile in no time.
