What food to avoid while wearing dental braces.

After getting braces, lots of people get discouraged when they discover they can no longer eat lots of great stuff they like. Certain foods are truly off the limit when dental braces are on.

Some of the "forbidden" foods are:

  • Hard and sticky candiesdental braces are bonded directly to the teeth and hard candies may easily break the brackets.
  • Raw vegetables, fruits and nuts – caution should be exercised when biting apples, carrots, almonds and other types of hard food, as they may snap the bracket off the teeth.
  • Chewing gum – the chewier the gum, the more likely it will pull out parts of the dental braces. Although many dentists permit the sugarless gum, it’s sometimes best to leave the chewing gum out of the daily routine until the braces are removed.

Often, the cravings come just because the food is on this "forbidden" list. Simply knowing this can be a great way of overcoming the pressure.

If self-motivation and self-control is not enough, it is always helpful to remember another important factor. Even though the orthodontist can repair the damaged dental braces, the additional appointment will cost extra, and might extend treatment period.
