There was a time when orthodontics or getting braces was considered to be fit only for children. It was believed that teeth can be corrected only up to a certain age after which they more or less get fixed and can be extremely difficult to alter. Another concern was that braces would be visible thereby embarrassing adults for a very long period of time. However, with the various technological advancements, adult orthodontics has gone on to become extremely popular in almost all corners of the world. Now days, more and more adults are going for orthodontic treatment as it helps in correcting the position and shape of their teeth and jaw and helps make them more confident in their day-to-day lives.

The main benefits of adult orthodontics are as follows:

  • It helps in improving the dental appearance by a great deal thereby increasing the self-confidence of the person concerned. This can make a difference between a successful work and social life and a complete failure.
  • Adult orthodontics helps in periodontal or restorative treatment thereby ensuring that the position and shape of teeth is corrected.
  • Surgical correction of the jaw or teeth can also be accomplished especially after an accident to ensure that the person gains self-confidence.
  • In case of loss of teeth, adult orthodontics helps in aligning the remaining teeth. This is extremely important in restoring the self confidence of a person.

However, the truth is that adult orthodontics is relatively complex and can pose a number of problems primarily as the teeth are non-growing thereby reducing the scope of treatment. Modification due to growth is not possible and any skeletal discrepancy needs to be corrected with a surgery or accepted. As the vertical condylar is not growing, the correction of overbite becomes extremely challenging. Moreover, periodontal diseases and loss of attachment becomes more common with age thereby making adult orthodontics even more difficult.

Differences between adult orthodontics and children orthodontics

The most common misconception is that orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that is only successful when treatment is done at a young age. Though this is true to an extent and treatment is quicker in case of young children, but adult orthodontics is also equally successful. A number of people do not get braces at a young age and over the years feel the need to correct the position and shape of teeth and jaws. Adult orthodontics is ideal for these people due to its numerous benefits as listed above.

However, there is also a silver lining to adult orthodontics. Once grown up people decide to undergo orthodontic treatment, they are more sincere and follow all that the doctor instructions more closely thereby improving the chances of success of the treatment. It can be safely commented that this branch of dentistry is there to stay and grow as more and more people realize the advantages of adult orthodontics and the impact it has on their lives in the long run.
